🕯️Halloween Story: Whispers from the Lake

The legend of Black Hollow Lake (jezioro Czarna Dolina) had been told for generations. Locals said the water never froze, not even in the coldest winter, and that at night, it glimmered (migotało) faintly under the moonlight — as if something beneath the surface was breathing.

Foggy lakeside with dense trees reflecting in the calm water. A small boat is visible in the distance. Atmosphere is serene and misty.

Lila had grown up hearing the stories. They said the lake was cursed (przeklęte) after a terrible accident long ago — when a young woman vanished without a trace. But Lila didn’t believe in curses. She believed in facts, not superstitions (przesądy).

So one misty Halloween evening, she decided to go there — alone.

The forest was silent, except for the sound of her boots crunching (chrzęszczące kroki) on wet leaves. A thin layer of fog crawled across the ground (pełzła po ziemi), moving like a living thing. Every tree seemed to lean closer (pochylać się bliżej), their branches twisting (skręcone gałęzie) like fingers reaching out in the dark.

When she reached the water’s edge, the air turned ice-cold (lodowaty). The moon was hidden behind clouds, and the only sound was the faint lapping of water (pluskanie wody).

“See?” she whispered to herself.“Just a lake.”

But then, from somewhere in the distance, came the sound of soft humming (ciche nucenie).A woman’s voice.Low, sad, endless.

Lila froze. She turned on her flashlight — and the beam landed on something pale floating near the shore.

A hand.

Before she could move, it disappeared beneath the surface.

Her breath caught in her throat (zabrakło jej tchu). The humming grew louder.

She took a step back — and suddenly, her foot sank into mud.Something cold wrapped around her ankle. Something that shouldn’t be there (nie powinno tam być).

She pulled free and ran. Branches snapped (pękały) around her, the forest seemed alive (wydawał się żywy). The whisper followed her — closer and closer (coraz bliżej).

When she finally reached the old wooden bridge, she dared to look back. And there, just above the water, stood a woman — dripping wet, with hollow eyes (puste oczy) and long dark hair clinging to her face. She smiled.

“You shouldn’t have come here…”

The next morning, the villagers found Lila’s flashlight lying near the bridge — still turned on, its light flickering weakly (migające słabe światło).No one ever saw her again.

And since that night, people say that if you stand by Black Hollow Lake at midnight, you can still hear her voice, whispering through the fog:

“Leave… before it’s too late.”
